44. BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA
So, I was asked yesterday why I haven't posted anything since the election. Well, the answer is ... I simply can't find the words to express my feelings. Seriously, I keep thinking I'm going to wake up any moment and watch McCain on MSNBC giving a press conference to announce his Chief of Staff or something. But it's not a dream, is it? Or maybe it is a dream in the best possible sense. After eight dark years that is W.'s reign, we just elected a smart man; a good man; a genuinely compassionate man; and yes, a black man. Who would have thought?
We're not a perfect nation: a few states (including mine) collectively decided to add hate and discrimination into law (I guess gay is the new black). And it sure didn't take long for my victory bubble to deflate a little after reading this ugliness in Noozhawk. I mean, does the following sound at all "gracious" to you?
Yet, if Obama proves himself, we will gladly give him his due. But he’d better protect our country. And he’d better rein in his spendthrift Democrat majority in Congress ...
Right, it's the Democrats who have spent us into the ground. Then, there's this ...
I’m sorry to find many of my “liberal” friends are psychological bullies who seek to silence genuine questions using insults and attacks. Such tactics are no doubt effective with some people — by intimidating them into silence you can convince yourself that they agree ...
Right, it's the liberals who yelled "Kill Him!" and "Terrorist!" at their rallies. And finally, there's this little gem ...
In his acceptance speech Obama acknowledged those of us whose vote he didn’t get. He claimed to want to earn our trust. Fine. We aren’t going to agree to socialism because we work hard for our money. Share the wealth of the shadow banking bandits — not ours — We-The-People. We want our borders secured and our country protected against radical Islam. We don’t think it’s fair to nationalize health care without nationalizing the legal profession ...
Huh?
So, no, we clearly aren't there yet. But let there be no doubt: Today is a good day in America.

hello t.l.,
I have decided not to rain on my more optimistic blogger colleagues for the time being. I do find it insulting when (more liberal) friends of ours say things like: "well if ::you:: voted for Obama maybe there is hope for our country". Sorry to say, there is no hope (read: none):
Bush likes war
Obama likes war
Bush likes bailouts
Obama likes bailouts
Bush panders to billionaires
Obama panders to billionaires...
Yes, this is me not raining on anyone's parade. Congrats to all of a liberal bent, but trust me, you will be hearing "I told you so" early and often from this blogger.
P.S. I voted for Clinton 2X too, and he sold us out for twenty pieces of silver to the chinese, globalists, & corporate scourge.
[/edgar]
Edgar, for dog's sake, c'mon. Yeah, the guy's not perfect, and he's got corporate ties and whatnot, but the next four years are gonna be WORLDS different than the last eight.
To give you just one example, he's already got a team of people "compiling a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues" (from the Washington Post)
He knows what needs to be done. You want to make sure he does it? Write to him. Write your congresspeople. It's up to us to make him be the president we want.
There's many differences between Obama and Bush, but here's what I think is the crucial one:
Bush ignores those he disagrees with
Obama is willing to listen
You want to throw in the towel now, so you can feel justified in complaining about it later? You'll be hearing "do something about it" early and often from THIS blogger. :)
Edgar - I know you think all politicians are corrupt, and if there's no changing your mind on that, then I'm not sure what I can say in response. And I'm certainly not going to sit here and tell you that Obama will be a great president, because that is unknowable.
Having said that, however, I just don't think it's realistic to say that Bush and Obama are the same. If you look at their governing philosophies along with their policy positions, they are simply polar opposits. A few thoughts on your comments ...
Obama likes war - What do you base this on? He was a strong opponent of the Iraq war from the beginning, and (unlike McCain) he is determined to get us out of there in 16 months. I don't think it's fair to say he's pro-war when he has never started one.
Obama likes bailouts - I have mixed feelings about the bailouts, and I agree with many of your thoughts about them. But they were by far a bipartisan decision.
Obama panders to billionaires - Does he? The vast majority of his money has come from people like me giving him less than $100. Let's see if he makes decisions in the interests of big business over ordinary people before making this claim.
Anyway, I respect your opinion, but I have high hopes for Obama and still think he might surprise you.
Hi guyz,
Man I am one bitter pill!
It makes me so angry when we get to the point where the criminals outnumber the honest folk. I truly believe that there is an unstoppable evil which has permeated all levels of gubbermint. Anyone who tries to root out the evil will be client 9d, bribed, or killed. If Obama so much as cuts the trade deficit 50%, or the debt 25%, or the oil consumption to 15 mb/d I will apologize profusely for spewing venom. Peace.
WHOA!!!!
i was reading and nodding off there for a moment in the comments until i saw this:
"Obama panders to billionaires - Does he? The vast majority of his money has come from people like me giving him less than $100."
That's not true. It's either a lie or a mistake. You tell me which.
Or pulls out of Iraq and Afghanistan completely. We have no right to be in either country.
BTW, I've seen old T-Boone and Buffett hanging around. The former speculated on oil and made me pay much more for a fill up, the latter has gotten uber billions in bailouts.

"It's either a lie or a mistake. You tell me which."
Appears it's a mistake. Half of his money came from donations of $200 or less. (source: WSJ) Still a huge step in the right direction.
Change?:
President-elect Barack Obama’s newly appointed chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, served on the board of directors of the federal mortgage firm Freddie Mac at a time when scandal was brewing at the troubled agency and the board failed to spot “red flags,” according to government reports reviewed by ABCNews.com...
Edgar, I agree that it's discouraging to see familiar, if unwelcome, faces on Obama's team. However, the man could very well know what he's doing. He kept his cool during the campaign, and the strategy paid off. So I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt to a certain point.
on the other hand, he is asking for your opinion on these matters. Why not give it to him?
