Protest Wendy McCaw with your dollars
The Exceptional Wife and I went and caught Citizen McCaw again last night at the Fiesta. Still an excellent chronicle of what went down two years ago (and continues to do down) with our local paper. And made even better with some streamlining of footage, and new info. If you can't get out to see it this weekend, pick up the DVD from their website for $20 -- these brave guys are thousands in the hole from making the movie, and every bit helps.
After the flick, the union was passing out flyers that list the local shops that still advertise with the NP (as of 10/8/08):
DOWNTOWN:
Santa Barbara Athletic Club
Hayward's
Enterprise Fish Co
Santa Cruz Market
Churchill Jewlers
Esau's Cafe
Mountain Air Sports
Lazy Acres
Home Improvement Center
Cabana Home
Santa Barbara Eyeglass Factory
One World Imports
Rugs and More/Antica Furnishings
UPPER STATE/DE LA VINA
Chuck's Restaurant
Tremblay Financial
Hot Springs Spa & Patio
Holser and Bailey
AUTO DEALERS
SB Chrysler Jeep
SB Nissan
SB Volkswagen
Graham Chevrolet
Hughes Auto
MONTECITO
Silverhorn
Fillippinis Financial Group
So if you shop at one of these places (and support the fired reporters), ask to talk to the manager, and let 'em know how you feel. Personally, I won't shop at any advertiser that supports this newspaper (or read the paper myself) until Wendy McCaw recognizes the union, as she is obliged to do by law and has been ordered to do by the court, and agrees to keep her opinions away from the news reporting.

hi guyz,
no worry here, i haven't ever stepped foot in CA, don't plan to either.
You have a list of businesses that have withdrawn advertising from the former News Press?
Patrick - outstanding idea!
We can concentrate our dollars and reward the advertisers with the backbone and ethics to give no more $$ to the Wenders.
The union is a THUG. These businesses that the union wants people to boycott are Santa Barbara-based and Santa Barbara-resident-owned . . . little guys trying to make a living . . . then here comes the thugs from the union. I WILL support these businesses.
Anon, I disagree completely. The Teamsters are acting on behalf of the fired reporters, who approached them (and not the other way around) when they realized they had absolutely no leverage or protection from their employer's whims.
Agree with that decision or not, Wendy McCaw has been breaking the law by refusing to negotiate in good faith with a union that her employees voted overwhelmingly to represent them. She has absolutely no respect for our laws or judges' rulings, and thinks her money lets her set her own rules. THAT is the definition of a thug.
Attacking Wendy's pocketbook is just about the only leverage the reporters have left in forcing her to negotiate. Not that she's going to run out of money any time soon, but perhaps the pressure and the embarassment may eventually convince her to follow the rules.
The union and the reporters' ultimate goal is to see the reporters rehired and the "wall" between editorial and news restored, so that reporters can do their jobs without fear of the owner meddling directly in their stories, or being fired at her whim.
I know for a fact that if that happens, they will immediately begin urging everyone to subscribe to and advertise in the News-Press again. More than anyone else, they want the NP to be the primary source of information and the paper of record in Santa Barbara.
Lazy Acres over on the Mesa is "downtown"? Really?
SB Eyeglass Factory owner is the guy who tried to sue the Park Service and Nature Conservancy over pig removal on Santa Cruz Island. Guess what, the pigs are all dead and the bald eagles are back as well as the Island Fox - a HUGE success for NPS, Nature Conservancy, and all those who stood by them these last few years. I boycott SB Eyeglass Factory just for their PIG-headedness and shortsightedness.
